WCLC 2023 | Acceptance Speech by 2023 Distinguished Service Award Winner Dr. Ramalingam

Editor's note: During the Opening Plenary Session of the 2023 World Conference on Lung Cancer, four leaders in the field of thoracic oncology were celebrated for their contributions. These annual awards not only honor the recipients for their lifelong achievements and dedication to the profession; they also pays tribute to the lung cancer legends for which the awards are named. The Paul A. Bunn, Jr. Scientific Award—named for the longtime executive director of IASLC—recognizes an IASLC scientist for a lifetime achievement of scientific contributions to thoracic cancer research. We were very glad to interview the 2023 Distinguished Service Award Winner Dr. Ramalingam to share his Acceptance Speech for this Award.

Dr. Ramalingam interviewed by Oncology Frontier at the 2023 WCLC conference.

Oncology Frontier: Please introduce yourselfincluding your name, profession and where are you from?

Dr. Ramalingam: Good morning. My name is Suresh Ramalingam. I am the Executive Director of Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta, United States. I am a thoracic medical oncologist.

Oncology Frontier: Could you share with us your feelings after receiving a 2023 Distinguished Service Award?

Dr. Ramalingam: It's a tremendous honor for me to receive the Paul A. Bunn, Jr. Scientific Award from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. Dr Bunn is a leader who has significant contributions to thoracic oncology and the IASLC, so to receive an award named after him in acknowledgement of some of the work I have tried to do i my career means a lot to me. I know we have a lot of work to do, but I am proud of the accomplishments we, as a community, have made in the fight against lung cancer, where our patients now have hope for long-term survival, even with advanced stage disease.
